It looks like Buick agrees with us. The replacement for the subcompact Encore crossover is on its way, and the new 2020 Encore GX is bigger, more attractive, and will come in two permutations that offer two turbocharged three-cylinder engines, two transmissions, and two drivetrains. Most importantly, though, is the fact that the Encore will no longer be totally hideous.

The new Encore GX is longer than the outgoing Encore and has improved styling.

Take a look at how much the Encore has changed. The 2019 version is below. Though the general look bears resemblance to the old Encore, the GX's design looks far more mature and upscale. The body creases above the rear fender and in the doors add sportiness, and the uptick in the rear side glass is more pronounced.

We always thought the Encore looked awkward and a bit too small.

Under the hood are two new engines in the form of three-cylinder mills: a turbocharged 1.3-liter three-cylinder with 155 hp and 174 lb-ft. This engine is available on the front-wheel drive Select and Essence trimmed models along with a CVT. The 1.3-liter three-cylinder is standard on all trims that have all-wheel drive, but with AWD, the Encore GX gets a nine-speed automatic. There's also a turbocharged 1.2-liter three-cylinder with 137 horsepower and166 lb-ft.

The Encore GX makes more sense in America where buyers want more space but don't want something bigger than a compact crossover. The GX provides a full five cubic feet of additional cargo space, more power in the top trim engine, and a better ride and improved performance thanks to the new VSS-F platform. There should be a palpable difference in the way the Encore GX drives compared to the outgoing vehicle, in addition to the much-improved styling.

Interior improvements make the Encore GX look more sophisticated, as well.

Buyers will be happy that the new Encore GX will come standard with advanced safety features like forward collision alert, automatic emergency braking, and lane keep assist with lane departure warning. These were optional on the Encore, so the new tech should draw more buyers. There's no word on pricing, but we're guessing the GX will be a little bit more expensive with the additional features. The GX will go on sale in the early part of 2020, and we're happy to see the rather unattractive Encore go bye-bye.
